Congratulations on obtaining employment with us.  This is an Induction Manual for all Warehousing employees.  It is a condition of your employment that you read this Induction Manual and answer the accompanying questionnaire to signify your understanding of its contents and your agreement to adhere to Policies, Procedures and Rules.

Housekeeping

Good housekeeping is fundamental to safety and it is the responsibility of all staff to maintain a high standard in their work area.  Keep floors, passageways, aisles and stairways clear of all obstructions.  Dispose of rubbish and scraps in proper containers.  Work areas must be kept clean and orderly at all times.  Your shift is not finished until you have cleaned up your work area.

Loading Docks

Loading dock hazards include

  • Slips caused by wet or oily floors
  • Falls from dock edges
  • Falls caused by unsecured dock plates
  • Carbon monoxide exposure from truck and powered material-handling equipment
  • Back injuries from improper lifting or carrying
  • Head and eye injuries from falling object
  • Hearing damage from a loud noise level
  • Injuries from careless operation of material handling equipment

Rules for vehicle safety should include the following:

  • Truck drivers must turn off their engines to prevent carbon monoxide release.
  • Equipment operators (not truck drivers) must check to see that truck wheels are chocked (they're the ones who could be injured).
  • Loading dock employees are prohibited from riding on material handling equipment or distracting the operators.
  • Loading dock employees must pay attention to power vehicles and other material handling equipment and keep out of the way.

To prevent injuries on loading docks, follow the rules printed on the following checklist.

 

Prevent slips, trips, and falls

  • Walk don't run
  • Stay away from dock edges
  • Don't jump onto or off a loading dock
  • Don't indulge in horseplay
  • Don't clutter walking and driving areas
  • Pick up trash and dispose of it properly
  • Clean up or report spills, leaks or wet areas immediately
  • Report any holes, cracks, or other damage in flooring
  • Secure movable dock boards
  • Watch where you're going

OPERATIONAL SAFETY PROCEDURES

  1. Always try to eliminate manual tasks with the use of mechanical aids or changing the task
  2. Always protect your back during a lift
  3. Lift and carry heavy loads correctly by keeping the load close to the body and lifting with the thigh muscles.
  4. Never attempt to lift or carry loads if you think they are too heavy
  5. Organise the work area to reduce the amount of bending, twisting and stretching required
  6. Take frequent breaks
  7. Warm up cold muscles with gentle stretches before engaging in any manual work
  8. Cool down after heavy work with gentle, sustained stretches
  9. Plan your lift - Do I need help? Do I need a mechanical aid?
  10. Always follow safe work methods provided by site
  11. Always use lifting equipment provided
  12. Be alert to all hazards
  13. Never attempt to catch a falling object
  14. Avoid reaching above the shoulders
  15. Avoid forward bending of the back
  16. Avoid twisting of the back
  17. Avoid sideways bending of the back

HOUSEKEEPING

  • Keep workplace clear of all obstructions
  • Clean up as you go
  • Keep exits clear

POTENTIAL HAZARDS

  • Muscle strains and injuries
  • Striking persons or property
  • Tripping over loose objects on floors, stairs and platforms
  • Load slipping
  • Load moving
  • Being hit by falling objects

FORBIDDEN

  • No worker should fully lift a person (other than a small infant) unaided
  • Never attempt to catch or stop falling items

 

Site Safety Rules

The following is a list of safety rules that applies to all Construction Sites.  Please familiarise yourself with these rules before entering the work site. You are required as a condition of casual employment to know, understand and abide by all safety rules:

  • Horseplay, practical jokes and rowdiness will not be tolerated at work as these often lead to personal injury.
  • Consuming alcohol or taking illegal or excessive legal drugs during work hours, or commencing work under the influence of alcohol or drugs is not permitted.
  • Observe the warning or safety signs that are displayed throughout the site. They are placed there for your protection.
  • If you leave your workplace for any reason, notify your supervisor of your intentions.
  • Any employee who disregards company safety procedures and endangers either their own safety or the safety of others may have their employment terminated by NDCS
  • All injuries no matter how minor must be reported to your supervisor. Give accurate details of how your accident or injury occurred so that corrective action may be taken.
  • If you are injured, trained First Aid Attendants are available to provide you with appropriate first aid and they will record the incident.
  • Protective clothing and equipment, where required, must be worn at all times.
  • Smoking is prohibited on site. Smoking is only permitted in designated smoking areas.
  • Site speed limits must be adhered too at all time.
  • Running is prohibited through the site.
  • Emergency procedures have been developed.  Make sure you know what is expected of you in the event of an emergency.
  • Read operating instructions for all equipment.
  • Store equipment and tools in their correct storage area.
  • Keep your immediate work area clean and tidy at all times.
  • Always follow the correct work/job procedures.
  • Use hand rails where provided.
  • Ask for assistance if the load is too heavy or awkward.
  • Wear steel-capped safety boots at all times.
  • Comply with reasonable direction from the principal contractor or any Person conducting a business on site.
  • Comply with the WHS Management Plan.
  • All workers and contractors must complete a site safety induction prior to starting work.
  • Do not walk through barricaded areas.
  • Use personal protective equipment in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions and where directed by the principal contractor and in accordance with site signage.
  • Operate machinery or equipment unless you have been trained
  • Carry any load that obstructs your vision.
  • Obstruct any emergency equipment or exit.
  • Remove any signs from equipment (ie. Danger tags etc)
  • Use equipment that is damaged
  • Use makeshift tools
  • Throw equipment, tools, product etc.
  • Ride on any equipment
  • Climb on machinery
  • Walk under hoisted loads
  • Tamper with or attempt to repair or adjust any machine, unless you have been trained and instructed to do so.

DO NOT

  • Operate machinery or equipment unless you have been trained
  • Carry any load that obstructs your vision.
  • Obstruct any emergency equipment or exit.
  • Remove any signs from equipment (ie. Danger tags etc)

 Forklift Safe Work Method

Risks have been identified in relation to using Forklifts in the warehouse. Please follow the Safe Work Method below at all times, when operating a Forklift.

Do not operate the forklift until you have direct permission from your supervisor. Please ensure that you hold a current valid and relevant license for the machine you are using.

Forklifts and Pedestrians

Whilst working in the warehouse you may be exposed to forklifts and electric pallet movers. These can be highly dangerous pieces of machinery if used incorrectly. All forklift and electric pallet mover operators are given a safe work method to follow in relation to operating the machinery in the warehouse. If you would like a copy of this please contact Landmark and we will provide you with a copy.

As a pedestrian in the warehouse you MUST follow the rules below;

The following rules apply to pedestrians in forklift zones:

  • All visitors/contractors- (casual employees) /drivers must wear a High Visibility Uniform/Safety Vest/Jacket and Safety Footwear (contractors and drivers)
  • Pedestrians always have right of way.  If you hear a forklift horn it is a warning to be conscious of forklifts operating in your proximity.  Establish eye contact with forklift drivers when in close proximity. If you don’t think a driver has seen you - DO NOT assume that they have. STOP and call out to let them know where you are. Do not continue to move until they acknowledge that they have seen you.
  • Pedestrian only areas are marked with two yellow feet or yellow stripes. When moving around the warehouse ALWAYS walk on the painted yellow pathways.   No movement outside of these areas (for visitors) is permitted unless authorised by the escorting warehouse staff member.
  • Pedestrians should NEVER attempt to approach any vehicle, or manual handling equipment, whether it is stationary or not. You never know when the operator may decide to move.
  • Pedestrians should NOT come within 3 metres of a moving vehicle or any moving manual handling equipment.
  • NEVER attempt to climb or ride on forklifts or any other manual handling equipment

 

 

SAFETY OPERATING PROCEDURES – FORKLIFT

DO NOT USE THIS MACHINE UNLESS YOU ARE LICENSED TO OPERATE A FORKLIFT

PRE-OPERATIONAL SAFETY CHECKS

  1. Check brakes, . lights and horn before use.
  2. Know the capacity of the forklift or lift truck before using it. Do not use a forklift without a load rating plate.
  3. Always remember the Safe Working Load of a forklift reduces as the mast is tilted forward.
  4. Ensure that the lifting forks are in sound condition and centred either side of the mast.
  5. Check tyre pressures. Never drive with a flat or under-inflated tyre.
  6. Faulty equipment must not be used. Report any faults immediately.

OPERATIONAL SAFETY PROCEDURES

  1. Do not use engine-powered forklifts in poorly ventilated areas.
  2. Always be on the lookout for pedestrians.
  3. Do not allow any person to ride on the forks.
  4. Ensure that the lifting tines are secure into the pallet and the load is stable before lifting or driving off.
  5. Be careful of ceiling clearance or overhead obstructions when raising the mast.
  6. Do not lift a load with the mast tilted forward.
  7. Always put the heavy end of the load against the load backrest.
  8. Never travel with the load elevated as it restricts vision.
  9. When approaching a blind corner, use horn and drive slowly.
  10. Always have someone guide you if a load restricts your vision.
  11. Slow down when changing direction or on wet or greasy surfaces.
  12. Do not travel with forks raised or reach mechanism extended.
  13. Avoid harsh braking, especially when carrying a load.
  14. Do not attempt to turn on an incline or sloping surface.
  15. Do not leave forks elevated when forklift is unattended.
  16. Do not dismount from a forklift while the engine is running unless the transmission is in park position and the parking brake is effectively engaged.
  17. When stopping the forklift perform the following three steps:
  18. a. Park on even ground and lower the forks to the ground.
  19. b. Shift the gear selector to park position and apply the parking brake.
  20. c. Turn off the ignition and remove the keys.

HOUSEKEEPING

  1. Do not refuel an engine-powered forklift unless the motor is stopped and ignition turned off.
  2. For gas powered vehicles change gas bottles in a well-ventilated area clear of a naked flame orsource of ignition.
  3. In the case of electric vehicles wear protective eyewear and gloves when checking batteries and handling electrolyte.

 

Pedestrian Operated Pallet Movers

Pedestrian Operated Pallet Movers (pallet jacks) are designed to transport pallets of goods from one place to another. As they are easy to operate and provide durable service, people often take them for granted.

Risks have been identified in relation to operating Pedestrian operated pallet movers (pallet jacks) in the warehouse. They have the potential to cause injury and or damage.  Please ensure that you follow all Safe work methods in this documents whilst operating a pedestrian operated pallet mover.

SAFETY OPERATING PROCEDURES – PEDESTRIAN OPERATED PALLET MOVERS

  1. Complete Pre start checklist before operating
  2. Read Operators Manual and Risk assessment
  3. Inspect the pallet jack in general to ensure it is in good working condition
  4. Familiarise yourself with the controls before using the pallet mover and ensure they are
  5. undamaged and responsive

OPERATIONAL SAFETY PROCEDURES

  1. No speeding- Operate at a walking pace. Do not run
  2. Pedestrians in all cases have the right of way
  3. Always check for pedestrians
  4. Always inspect machine prior to use
  5. Know your equipment and do not operate unless you have been authorised to do so
  6. Do not allow passengers
  7. Do not bump anything with the forks
  8. Ensure the load is stable and not stacked too high
  9. Centre the load in the fork arms
  10. Do not push extra loads or other units
  11. Avoid sudden or jerky movements
  12. Exercise caution on ramps and inclines
  13. Do not operate with greasy hands or shoes
  14. Come to a complete stop before changing directions
  15. Always ensure that the pallet jack is lowered to the ground before loading or unloading the stock on the pallet
  16. When approaching cross aisles or intersections slow down and keep to one side
  17. Never exceed the maximum safe lifting capacity of the pallet jack. The safe lifting capacity is located on the data plate
  18. Do not operate if the machine is unsafe
  19. Always park in a safe place. Do not obstruct stairwells or fire exits
  20. Use the handle to pull the load behind you are you move. This gives you clear vision
  21. If you are operating at a slow speed you will not hit the backs of your legs as you move
  22. When coming to a stop, ensure that you do not pull the pallet jack into yourself. Don’t stop walking until you pull the handle up to stop the pallet jack

StockPicker Safe Work Method

OPERATIONAL SAFETY PROCEDURES

  1. ALWAYS drive the forklift in at a safe speed, in a responsible manner and with full control. The safe speed on this site is at walking pace.
  2. ALWAYS wear a correctly fitted harness when . operating the stockpicker
  3. ALWAYS ensure that the harness is secured to the stock picker correctly. Ask your supervisor for assistance if you are unsure.
  4. NEVER engage in any form of horse play whilst operating the stockpicker
  5. NEVER allow Passengers
  6. NEVER operate the stockpicker without a current, valid LO license, approval from your supervisor
  7. NEVER perform sudden starts or braking or corner at high speed.
  8. ALWAYS use your horn as a warning
  9. ALWAYS give way to pedestrians.
  10. ALWAYS reduce speed on an incline.
  11. ALWAYS travel on an incline with your forks facing up the incline, whether loaded or not
  12. DO NOT turn on an incline
  13. ALWAYS drive with your back closest to the racking in a warehouse
  14. ALWAYS reduce speed on slippery surfaces
  15. NEVER park with the key in the ignition
  16. ALWAYS keep a safe distance from the edges of loading bays and ramps, other forklifts and pedestrians
  17. NEVER drive with any part of your body outside the compartment.
  18. ONLY handle loads that are stable and safely arranged
  19. NEVER take a Stockpicker OUTSIDE
  20. Please pay particular attention to roller doors and exits including height clearance

Electric Pallet Mover Safe Work Method

Electric Pallet Movers are designed to transport stacks of good from one place to another. As they are easy to operate and provide durable service people often take them for granted.

Risks have been identified in relation to operating Electric Pallet Movers in the warehouse. They have the potential to cause serious injury and or damage. Please ensure that you do not operate any machinery without first being inducted by your supervisor. Please follow all safe work method statements whilst operating machinery.

  19. Never exceed the maximum safe lifting capacity of the vehicle. The safe lifting capacity is located on the data plate
  20. Do not operate if the machine is unsafe
  21. Never move double stacked pallets
  22. Always park in a safe place. Do not obstruct stairwells or fire exits
  23. NEVER allow passengers on the pallet mover

SAFETY OPERATING PROCEDURES – BLADE AND CUTTING SAFETY

OPERATIONAL SAFETY PROCEDURES

  1. Never use a broken blade
  2. Keep the Blade as short as possible
  3. Retract the Blade as soon as possible
  4. Angle the blade AWAY from your body
  5. NEVER cut TOWARDS yourself
  6. Apply consistent, firm pressure when cutting
  7. Keep your thumb away
  8. Keep your non-cutting hand out of the way of the blade
  9. Wear gloves where possible
  10. Take care when changing dull blades
  11. Never engage in any form of horseplay when using a knife or Blade
  12. NEVER attempt to catch a falling blade - ALWAYS jump out of the way
  13. NEVER walk around with the knife blade exposed

  1. Dispose of blades in a safe manner in a puncture resistant container

Safety First

  • You may be required to use mechanical aids for transporting pallets and goods.
  • Careless or dangerous use of equipment may result in termination of your employment.
  • Under NO circumstances are you to operate any equipment without the appropriate qualifications or without your Supervisor’s permission.
  • Some sites have conveyors on them. Always take note that The RED button or RED cord is the Emergency STOP for the conveyor. Make sure you know where they are located along the conveyor
  • Always use the Pedestrian stairs when crossing to the other side of the conveyor. NEVER attempt to climb on, over or under the conveyor
  • Keep loose clothing away from the conveyor. Always ensure your hair is tied back and your shirt / vest tucked in or secured when working near the conveyor
  • WHS Safety information boards are located all throughout the site. They have all of the current site safety information for you to review.
  • Keep to painted walkways
  • NO FOOD OR DRINK TO BE TAKEN INTO THE WAREHOUSE
  • The use of Mobile Phones, head phones, ear phones, speakers, MP3 devices, IPODS or any other type of listening device is not permitted on site. If you are caught using any of the above items whilst working, your employment may be terminated.
  • Observe posted safety signs at all times. They are there for your safety

 

DECLARATION

We as your employer, have the duty of care to keep you safe at work. It is our responsibility to ensure you are well rested and fit to attend work.

To be fit for work includes the following;

  • Not being too tired or fatigued to work
  • Not being under the influence of drugs or alcohol, including over the counter medications that affect your ability to work
  • Making sure you have had an 8hr break from any other work BEFORE you start your next shift

We are happy for you to work elsewhere, however you must have an 8 hour break between finishing your shift elsewhere and before commencing your shift for us.
